Activities

Troop 449 plans one overnight activity every month, which usually includes camping.  Other activities include service projects, helping troop members with Eagle Scout projects, Court of Honor, Scout Sunday, and weekly meetings during which we work on merit badges and plan activities.  In the summer, we spend a week at a Scout camp and often take a backpacking trip.

Outings

Hiking, biking, kayaking, camping and more!  Boy Scout Troop 449 is active in all seasons.

Some of our outings have included:

  • Canoeing to Bear Island on the NC coast
  • Smoking beef jerky in a smokehouse set up at a campsite near Chapel Hill
  • Backpacking at Eno River State Park
  • Biking and tubing at New River Trail State Park in Virginia
  • City trips to Charleston, SC and Asheville, NC
  • Competing in the cardboard boat regatta at Camporee at Camp Campbell on Kerr Lake
  • Spending a day rafting and rock climbing at the National Whitewater Center in Charlotte
  • Hiking to the top of Stone Mountain, NC
  • + much more

There’s something for everyone; come join us!

Service

Service is an important part of the Scouting experience.  In addition to the benefits to our community, and the concept of “giving back” instilled in our Scouts, service projects make us visible in our community and positively enhance the image of Troop 449 and Scouting.

Our troop completes regular service projects throughout the year — such as:

  • Providing meals at SECU House
  • Assisting with landscaping projects at New Hope Presbyterian Church
  • Working on trail improvement on parts of the Mountains-to-Sea Trail
  • Cleaning up litter at Jordan Lake

We also join in the service projects our troop members organize for advancement to Eagle Scout.

Summer Camp

Our troop goes to Summer Camp for one week each summer at a Scout camp such as Camp Raven Knob in Mount Airy, NC or Camp Durant in Carthage, NC.

Summer camp is a great way to earn merit badges, meet Scouts from lots of different troops, and participate in activities like biking, paddleboarding, archery, rifle shooting, rock climbing, and more.
